What the?

A noetic catallaxy sounds like a bit of a mouthful but it's really a very simple concept with a long history.


Noetics means subjective knowledge and inner wisdom. Stemming from the Greek no─ôsis, the term has been around since Plato. Noetic experiences are, in the words of William James, "states of insight into depths of truth unplumbed by the discursive intellect. They are illuminations, revelations, full of significance and importance".


'Economy' comes from the Greek oikonomia meaning "the art of household management". While this was a politcally expedient coinage that flattered the rulers of Medieval city states, it doesn't describe what we have today. Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek proposed and popularised the term 'Catallaxy' as an alternative which better describes a network of mutually benefitial exchange.

Affective Agency

Affect is about emotion, the easily categorised (suprise, love, etc), the uncategorised (the 'vital') and the stuff that happens before you percieve it as emotion. In giving this agency, the ability to act and have an effect, the emotional values of people become integral to the economy and move us beyond a society driven by labour exchange and capital accumulation.

How does it work?

The noetic catallaxy allows real people to value processes and products by combining technologies like the Internet of Things, Big Data and Blockchain with their own affective insights.
